MLK day, what did the committee trade for this holiday?

img_1_1705442559316.webp Martin Luther King Jr was a great man, symbolic of the fight for civil rights by minorities in our nation.

No one is questioning that we should be honoring MLK and that it should be a paid holiday.

But, this discussion cannot ignore that like other holidays, UPS often schedules workers on paid holidays and each time workers are forced to fight for proper pay. Or, threatened with discipline up to termination, if they take a paid holiday off.

So, very early in the 2023 contract negotiations, the committee (sworn to non-disclosure) released a statement that UPS had caved and agreed to a paid MLK holiday.

But, never did the committee members come clean and tell the membership what was given, for that holiday?

Infact, the committee continues to claim that there were NO CONCESSIONS in this HISTORIC agreement. But, everyone now sees there were many concessions.

It would be nice to know what the committee gave up for MLK day?

I've negotiated about 30 bargaining unit contracts, it is not uncommon for the company representatives to say, we can't give that, unless you give us this.

In legal terms that quid pro quo, something for something.

Any guesses what was traded for MLK day, and was it a good trade or did workers lose out again?
