Based on press reports and on information provided to the World Socialist Web Site, the layoffs appear to be concentrated among part-time warehouse workers, especially those working daytime sort shifts.

The location joins a company hub in Louisville, Kentucky, in closing its day sort on Feb. 16.

I never believed nor could I prove that UPS was diverting work from our building (PHL) until last week. I do not handle packages but was on the belt and helped a lady in passing by pulling a few packages back to her side of the belt to retain. She said, that goes to Louisville. It was work that we normally do on our midnight (Chicago ORD and Atlanta ATL). The company is sending our work to other buildings like Louisville that is automated. Speaking to feeder drivers, they have told me that work that they normally do was diverted to newer automated buildings such as Middletown PA. So, yes, they are diverting work and buildings like ours (PHL) are suffering the consequences of a bad union.

Exactly, same situation at Swan Island, here in PDX. We are one of the largest conventional hubs in the Pacific Northwest, but with a two smaller automated hubs, Alderwood and Hillsboro, plus a major automated hub in Tacoma, UPS was able to close the entire day sort. Local 162 confirmed that the majority of the diverted volume is going to either Alderwood or Tacoma, both automated.
