Local 853 cancels monthly meetings

Teamsters Local 853 in Oakland, California, which represents UPS'ers in San Jose, has decided to cancel summer union meetings even though their UPS members could be on strike soon. And you thought Rome Aloise was bad ... They even shut down their Facebook page.

Canceling summer general membership meetings is quite common. It doesn't stop a local from having craft or contract meetings.

You want to know about Rome Aloise ask the people who know him best, the members of Local 853. They reelected him over and over. They'd easily elect him again. You and everyone else knows thats fact.

He bargained Costco in to the Western Plan at a good start rate for retail, but what you continue to ignore is those teamsters got up to 10 years past service credits as if the company had been contributing for their whole career. They also kept the 401k they previously had. Gov appointees and flunkies have made a fortune off our union and the cash cow continues, but that doesn't mean we have to fall for their BS.

With all due respect to those who seem ok with cancelling meetings at the same time 350,000 brothers and sisters could be on the streets, missed the point. A strike of that magnitude will require every member, be they bus drivers, truck drivers, warehouse workers, or whatevever. Business agents should be dragging their members into the meetings to find out how they can help, or at least be at a meeting when decisions are made to spend money on the strike of vote for relief. When 350,000 strike, our very existence is at stake, including our health & welfare and pension plans. A simple craft meeting is not going to get it.

Misinformation. Locals go dark during the summer but it's a membership vote during the general membership meetings. The EBoard and/or Principal doesn't just suspend general membership meetings

Yes, it is presented through a motion and if properly seconded it is voted up or down by the members. Lot's of locals do this routinely. I'm not trying to discount your position T Post, the members present made the call, I would have voted for the meetings considering the contract issue at play here.
