I heard a news story this morning about the union UNITE. The story was all about how much organizing the union had done in 2022. It went on to say they had done more organizing than the any other union BUT THE TEAMSTERS who had grown by more than 200,000 members. We have not grown by 200,000. If mistakes were made in 21 & 22 we need to clarify and admit to what happened or what credibility we have in the labor movement will evaporate.

I think we can dispense with the debate over whether or not the Teamsters organized or gained 200,000 members, it's not even a possibility. If you count up ALL the workers who voted in ALL RC elections (wins and losses) between 2020 and 2022, you get less than 200,000. There were no major card check victories covering tens of thousands of workers in those years. UPS actually employed fewer people in 2022 than in 2021 (543k internationally/443k US in 2022 vs 543k/458k in 2021) so UPS membership wouldn't account for it. This is clearly a case of questionable accounting/reporting/auditing by either the Hoffa administration or the O'Brien administration.

Its been a couple of weeks now and no clarification or acknowledgement. The O'Brien Admin is comfortable in letting good but gullible Teamsters believe the union grew by 206,000 new members. Not just shameful, as the Brother points out.

In typical Oz fashion, a 30 year clerical employee was fired for " having the wrong numbers posted on the LM2". These forms are the responsibility of the IBT accountants and CPA firm ( which is paid at least $100k to file these forms) and lastly the GP, and the GST who sign the forms, a legally binding Federal form and whose responsibility it is to have reports be accurate. So all the professionals missed it, who are paid to submit accurate forms, and the GP and GST, who are elected to make sure the reporting to the membership is accurate, not to mention that O'Brian and Zuckerman bragged about the inaccurate numbers, and tried to take credit for the false numbers! So, some poor staff person, with 30 plus years gets fired; no warnings, no due process, just fired! A lame attempt to cover for mistakes that Oz should own and simply apologize for. Instead a further lesson to IBT employers on how to treat their employees, our sisters and brothers. Hypocrisy isn't a strong enough word.

If this is true I hope they go public and tell their story. Sounds like they were a scapegoat. I thought labor unions were supposed to protect workers. Maybe there is a labor lawyer out there who would be interested in this story. Or if not perhaps a labor writer who is looking for a story.

If this is an accurate report we should be outraged and embarrassed. Every officer in this union knows that the General Secretary Treasurer and the General President are responsible for the accuracy of Federal forms that we all have to file. Total incompetence and now scapegoating. How can we help this thirty year worker?
