I don't think that members given a way in should be valued or respected more than new teamsters especially members that have organized their own shops. Those that have been given opportunities that others don't have access to should help bring new blood in. That's all.

Many Teamsters in the film industry are nepo Teamsters, including Lindsay Dougherty. She got her start because her daddy ran the local in Detroit and was able to slide her onto a production there. She then used her daddy's coat tails to continue her very short career as a Dispatcher in LA before using her daddy's connections to get her a job as a BA with 399, which covers mostly drivers, which she never was. It was also her daddy's connection to Local 25 and O'Brien over the years that got her where she is in the IBT. You can also look at the history of the Coli's and the history of nepotism in that local, along with its ties to the film industry. 817 and the O'Donnell's. The industry is full of it and qualifications don't seem to matter.

Lets face it over the years the Movie Division has seen a lot of problems. Opportunities for discriminatory hiring like the example of our new VP (and leading name to be GST) are not uncommon in the Divisions history. Probably the highest paid jobs in the Teamsters with very good conditions. Others here appear to know far more about it than me.

From where I sit, nepotism, favoritism and sexism has been and is an ongoing problem of not only the IBT, but also many of our locals and joint counsels throughout our great nation. We are a membership of 1.2 million and members of color (i.e. Black and Brown) makeup one-third of our membership. This is not reflected at the decision making table of the IBT. 22 Executive Board members and 3 Trustees (25 in total) without one being a person of color. The disparity is telling and showing and in need of discussion. We talk about honoring Dr. Martin Luther King with a paid holiday, and we talk about honoring our Teamsters of Color during Black History month, but once again, this is not reflected in the composition of the Executive Board of the IBT. Dr. King, in his book, "All Labor Has Dignity," said that "membership without having a seat at the decision making table is second class citizenship." Sadly, this is the state of our great union today!! The struggle and the discussion continues and we need to have a "come to Jesus" meeting on inclusion vs exclusion at all levels of our great, historic union--- the International Brotherhood of Teamsters!

I would agree that inclusion and diversity are problems for leadership at all levels in most locals, joint councils and the GEB. This is something that must be self-consciously dealt with. The various committees should be areas for member activity, leadership building and recruiting for our organizations. The prospects of women and leaders of color stepping forward should be embraced, not derided. Having young worker committees has been a priority for many of the leaders in the new administration for some time, to develop new leadership at every level.

Yet in this thread there are inconsistencies and inaccuracies. One of the two women on the GEB is bashed at the rumor of her being elevated to GST. Mind you just an unsubstantiated rumor. And the current GEB is the most diverse team assembled. Clearly not all older white men. 27 total (including 3 Trustees), 4 leaders of color, 2 women and at least 3 age 50 or younger at the time of swearing in. Clearly not reflective of our membership as a whole, but moving in the right direction. Ultimately, members need to earn leadership spots by doing the job of building the union well and the recognition will come.
