While a lot of this involves bad management, the lion's share of the blame has to fall on the backs of the total lack of experience and leadership skill of the officials of the Locals which represent the members in the liquor industry. For the last 50 years, non-union wholesalers have been prevented from operating and undercutting the organized wholesalers in California. Consequently, the agreements of 16 locals were consolidated into a statewide agreement that was head and shoulders above anywhere else in the nation. The power this gave the Teamsters allowed for successful organizing across the country...Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Indiana, New York, Illinois, to name a few stares where the power and leverage of California liquor agreements resulted in hundreds of new members across the country.
In less than the last 3 years, non-union wholesalers ( some of which are organized in other states) were allowed to operate in California unorganized. This resulted in liquor and wine lines being taken away from our members, and the non-union wholesalers to prosper. The first result is the demise of RNDC, formerly Youngs Market Company, a 130 year old company, and 1200 great jobs down the drain. This will certainly affect the other union company and the members. It is a total and complete failure of the leadership and those who claimed to be the greatest negotiators ever!!! They never understood or appreciated how things got to where they were, and all they could do is brag about piggy backing on the past. Now it is unraveling, the locals are doing nothing, didn't anticipate the obvious, and the membership suffers. Disgraceful and sad!

Between Trumps ridiculous economic and trade policies and our Trump submissive Teamster president the union will be lucky to survive. The OZ/TDU/IBT has no answers or plans for any of the challenges that face us.

I remember when Fred said we were going to organize in our core industries. We seem to be losing members from our core industries with no plans to turn it around. Prosecutors and pot shops are not exactly our core industries.
