Local Officer Healthcare and Pension

A fellow UPSer told me that the local officers get different (better) pensions and healthcare than the rank and file. Is this true and if so how can we justify this?

Yes they do. Members get the healthcare that is negotiated in their contract, same as pension. Officers get healthcare from the International or JC plan including their pensions

Well I want to see what they get. How do I pull their health and pensions plans up so i can read it?

You cant pull it up. The only way is for a staff member to show you

I believe it depends on the Local. Generally they have the same H&W contributions and H&W plan as members in their local. Pension contributions are determined by three factors:
1) Local union bylaws or practice (generally same multi-employer pension fund that members of local are in: (New England, Central States, Western, Local and regional union plans); some locals contribute to both New England and Central States on behalf of local union staff). When the Central States was created under Hoffa, Sr. in the mid 1950's most if not all Locals participated and contributed on behalf of local union employees
2) Joint Council 10 (New England) has an annuity plan requiring contributions for covered local union staff members. No knowledge of other Joint Councils.
3) International officers were (or still are) covered by IBT Family Plan pension
4) Ron Carey and the GEB members during Carey's first and only term, terminated the Teamsters Affiliates Pension Plan (TAPP) that covered all International, Regional Conference (Carey's GEB terminated the Regional Conferences, because they duplicated services already provided by the International and Joint Councils), Joint Council, and Local officers. However, Locals had the option to make contributions themselves to TAPP if they chose to do so.

So, yes, there were and still are multiple pension plans for many Teamster International, JC, and Local union employees. The Teamsters Family Plan provides a pretty hefty benefit, not sure how it works.

My knowledge may be incomplete and possibly outdated. Ask a GEB member (and don't hold your breathe waiting for an answer).

Accurate analysis, there should really be alot more information on Teamster Pensions and how they work. It'e too bad LM-2's don't tell the pension story for officers, some are very good.
