During this Heat Wave, Drivers Continue to Suffer

Following the multiple announcements by UPS CEO Carol Tome' and IBT General President Sean O'Brien last year during the contract negotiations, the general public thinks that all UPS drivers now have Air Conditioning.

Tome' touted the air conditioning as a clear sign about how much UPS cares about drivers, their safety and their well being.

O'Brien claimed Victory for workers in his efforts to spin his negoriations as historic.

One year later, there are few, if any UPS trucks with air conditioning, UPS drivers continue to be forced to work in hot boxes that would violate the Geneva convention for mistreatment of prisoners of war!

Is this the indication of how much UPS and Tome' really disrespect, if not abuse UPS workers?

This safety abuse is akin to sending workers into unsafe coal mines.

As for the Teamsters, the poor weak language negotiated into the "historic" contract is indicative that they once again sold-these-workers-out.

The language allows for UPS to continue to operate the hot boxes, but as they replace the old trucks, new trucks should have air conditioning. It is widely known, UPS does not often replace vehicles, keeping them in operation sometimes for decades.

As it turns out, this time workers were sold-out for a publicity stunt giving the IBT's president a chance to stroke his ego.

Since the 2023 "historic" contract, UPS has been on a tear, cutting services and cutting workers.

In 2020, Tome' announced the UPS plan, "Better not Bigger".

During stockholder announcements since the contract was negotiated, UPS has announced the elimination of 43,000 jobs.

On Facebook pages, Teamster workers have posted hundreds if not thousands of posts regarding building closures, sort closures and lost Teamster jobs. The IBT has not responded.

As UPS had announced the plan to eliminate jobs in 2020, those outside the negotiations room have to wonder what did the IBT committee do to protect jobs, workers and their families?

Did the committee negotiate severance packages? NO

Did the committee negotiate re-training and placement programs? NO

Did the committee propose anything to counter the lost jobs? NOT that they'll say. ?

I was not in negotiations either. But, how could the lead negotiators have failed to address the "better not higger" plan? Tome' had made such a public spin about it prior to negotiations.

These buildings and package cars should never be a degree hotter than the ambient temperature outside, period. Ventilation is the key. We had a smoking motor housing and the plant engineering department turned the heater reversers on to suck out the smoke from the area. It was so much cooler in that area. It is apparent UPS has no desire to cool their buildings.

Just thought I'd repost this thread from last summer. there are lots of posts about AC on this site from more than two years ago, people here were rightly skeptical. Appropriate considering it's almost a hundred degrees here which will make it about 125 in the back. AC the big win, what a joke.
