I am happy to see a surge in organizing campaigns.

Under the Biden NLRB, unions in general have been more successful in organizing new members.

1. However, with the closure of YRC, losing 22,000 Teamsters.

2. The UPS systemwide closure of sorts and distribution centers (totaling 43,000 jobs eliminated, according to the UPS SEC disclosures).

3. The movie industry workers have been locked out by producers for more than a year, with most of 12,000 movie drivers out of work.

4. The IBT pipeline division has all but given the Operators a free pass to take all the truck driver jobs in the industry.

With all of these lost Teamster jobs, can't imagine adding 7 lower paid clerks here and 11 lower paid clerks there will replace the high paying jobs that have been lost.

The post implies that much more organizing can and should be done. I agree. However, the comparison of "lower" and "higher" paying jobs really has no place in the implication. It's about the members.

It's not a rumor, the Tomatek unit listed in the above press release was said to be a GCIU group. Yeah we're back to raiding, solidarity forever. Raiding is disgusting.

Let me say, with twenty-two years of organizing, that I have mixed feelings about the justification, or lack thereof, for raiding. I have seen my share of bargaining units that had absolutely poor representation. Ie; absent officers/agents, almost total disconnect from officers/agents, deals made with management in secrecy, no involvement by members with union matters in any way. Failure of duty to represent. In those cases, the rank and file simply wanted what they deserved. Though, because of no-raid agreements those members were trapped with lousy working conditions that should never have prevailed. In cases like these I just can't bring myself to fault another union for trying to help those members. Now, there are some unions that put emphasis on raiding for the sole purpose of increasing its numbers. That's an entirely different conversation. In my experience it is extremely difficult for a raiding union to be successful where the current representation is performing at a certain level. Exceptions to that can be found in the public sector. Most public sector unions are looked upon by the membership as performing a "service". The inability to strike has something to do with that. Rank and filers pretty much don't organize, or create as sense of unity, for strength too often. Decisions on collective bargaining agreements are often made in binding arbitration before a panel where the union negotiators "make their points" (provide the service). So, in some of the cases a raiding union has a much greater chance of success simply by offering a dues structure that requires members to "pay less" for its "service". There is a whole different desire that I have for those particular unions. Hee, hee!

Like everyone else I agree there needs to be more organizing. As I read the Breakthru strike and story it's really a story about how hard it is to get a first contract, unless I'm reading it wrong. Wasn't this location that is on strike just recently organized?
