UPS Executives Meet March 26th, Discuss Increasing Volume/Revenue and Automation

Network of the Future is the new automation plan that UPS executives are cooking up.

"We executed the strategy we set forth nearly three years ago by changing almost every aspect of our business. After coming off a difficult market in 2023, the small package industry is poised to return to growth in 2024 and beyond.expanded operating margins and increased free cash flow to deliver long-term value to our shareowners."

In addition, the company will share details about how it will lower its cost to serve through its Network of the Future initiative, a plan that will optimize and further automate its core integrated network.

Meanwhile, at a meeting on the Day Sort closure here in Portland, Oregon, Ben Vedus, negotiator for inside employees for the NMA, and speaking on behalf of Mark Davison and the IBT, stated that "Volume is decreasing and may stabilize by summer." He also did not want to discuss AI/automation.

In other words, the IBT/OZ/TDU are doing damage control for UPS, actively facilitating these layoffs and attempting to stifle any anger by helping the company's narrative that it is broke. When did the union become the HR and PR department of UPS? Well, since this ridiculous contract has no AI/automation protections, it is clear that this current administration must cover for UPS, as they would lose all credibility if people knew the truth:

• Volume is returning.
• UPS made 2.5 billion in profit over the last four months of 2023
• Automation will "mitigate" labor costs, decreasing the workforce by some 50-80% according to industry insiders through the Network of the Future Initiative.

These are facts. A much smaller bargaining unit will mean underfunded pensions, health and welfare funds and less union bargaining power.

Howard and I were working on this before he died. "The petition is a statement, it's the start." That's what he said every time he talked about it to Steve Zeltzer, Barry Anderson and others. We need a mass national mobilization to begin the work of countering the "Network of the Future" - we need our own Network of the Future! We need to be honest about the failures of the 2023-2028 CBA. We need to bring shame to UPS for being a job destroyer. We need to activate what Howard called a "community of interest." I am terribly sad at his death. He was my friend, my mentor and provided me with the steely reserve needed to take on Davison and Vedus. He will be missed. The work must continue, because that's what he would have wanted. We must not let UPS/OZ control the narrative as tens of thousands of UPS Teamsters are tossed away for robots.
