He is talking about the two top leaders of TDU. Ken Paff essentially runs Teamsters for a Democratic Union. Wow, imagine that, TDU uses the Teamster name without repercussions and both names mentioned (Paff and Levin) AREN'T Teamsters and one never was, the other isn't a retiree either. The 3 men who started another medium (TeamsterLink) to help communicate union news are being targeted. How long have you been acquainted with TDU? Where were you when these 3 men were fighting corruption in the Teamsters union?

I supported Leedham and Sylvester when they ran. It was tough to support Tim when he couldn't win his own local.

He was sucking up to O'Brien, Rome and Hoffa.

All three of these men were TDU at one time. Not anymore because TDU is a sell out organization now.

I know that Leedham and Sylvester were never members of TDU , not sure about Zimmerman.

Sylvester mentioned that in the video they did together.

The economic is not some natural phenomenon like radon or gravity that is inherent to existence. It is a social creation. In every major technological and industrial revolution, from the railroads to Ford factories to containerization in globalized shipping, there has been a battle between the class that does the work (labor) and the class that makes the profit (capitalists). The issue facing UPS today is not some massive decrease in the volume - which mind you did happen throughout late 2023 and the company posted a net profit of $2.5 billion in the fourth quarter alone - but AI/automation. Volume is returning.

It was very revealing today, in the "informational meeting" held at Local 162 (no, Davison was not there but Ben Vedus spoke for the Local) that the union seems to have no problem facilitating these layoffs for the company. Vedus even thanked the UPS labor management for their good work. How about that? When the question was inevitably raised - and raised again and again - about automation, he did acknowledge that drone deliveries are coming, volume is being diverted to automated hubs and that the Baltimore closure was a result of too many of those pesky (overpaid) 22.2s you all have on the East Coast. Considering that we all out here on the West Coast are humble enough to submit ourselves to a wait of 10-15 years for a 22.3 full-time job and another 4 years to make top scale that is about still $10 less than an RPCD makes after 5 years. Sacrifices must be made for the company.

So yes, automation and overpaid inside workers (making the same top scale as RCPDs) are the real problem here for UPS as it "struggles" through this economic downturn where it only nets $2.5 billion in profits over the last four months of 2023. But I am glad he has a good relationship with UPS labor managers, because that's really what counts, right?

Now, to return to my broader point - people have been fighting bosses and layoffs and closures for well over a century in the US. As we all should - and there are a variety of tools that the IBT can use (instead of spending its money on Nixon Peabody): political, social and economic forces to be rallied, initiatives to be passed and campaigns to be launched. There is simply no appetite to take on this issue of AI/automation. I think they have their hands tied with trying to take down T-Link.

Davison is feeling the heat all over the West for the Worst Western Sup in decades. Vedus is retiring so Davison pushed him out to take the heat. This is what passes for leadership in todays teamsters.

They both accepted TDU endorsement and help campaigning but that was when TDU was actually a reform organization.

DSA is tied to TDU and together support O'Brien. This guy does not support O'Brien or TDU, so he's not DSA.

However, you are right about TDU and DSA encouraging young people to get a job at UPS since up to today would hire anyone with a heartbeat. But a lot of these lazy young people just don't last for the shit pay.

Funny is journalist Teddy Ostrow quit the UPSurge podcast and quit praising O'Brien, Fain and TDU.

Word got out David Levin treated him like shit. He was also left heartbroken with O'Brien' talking big and settling for a shit contract. He also didn't agree with the stand-up auto strikes after promoting Fain like a militant leader.

But he is lazy and didn't want to get a job at UPS. He's been trying to land an easy union job for Verizon, but they aren't hiring.

Well, now that we have veered so far from the OP, I will address this and then return to the sub-thread and then take us back through the rabbit hole to the OP.

Mr Teamster: I am not a member of the DSA. While I have read Michael Harrington's book The Other America in college, and I probably know my Francis Fox Piven better than some of the eager "radicals" who flocked to UPS for the bogus Teamsters United/TDU/OZ "strike ready" campaign, I find DSA politics to be far too accommodating of TDU and the OZ administration (as Faust pointed out above). I left Italy in April 2021 after a crushing economic lockdown that left me with little choice but to return to the nation of my birth, the US (and yes, it's all out there in my book: my father is Sicilian, and I am a US-Italian dual national, my husband is British and I was deported from the UK after being incarcerated in 2016 from a case that dragged through the English courts for almost two years. And I served 10 months in Her Majesty's Prisons, was deported to the EU, where I wrote my book on the prison-industrial system, for Vice magazine and lived in Eastern Europe doing pieces on the rise of fascism in Poland, art and race. In 2020, I moved to Italy about 10 days before the COVID lockdowns and well, that didn't work out too well financially. Seriously, email me if you have such a great interest and I will personally tell you my life - cause I ain't hiding. Whatever else we disagree on - I think we can all agree on that.)

Moved back to US after COVID flight restrictions allowed in 2021, and lo and behold first job offer was loading trucks at UPS and I knew that coming back to this country and having any health problems meant that one needed great health insurance (the other option being die quickly). I have been there ever since as I actually like my work - I sort now -, I love (some) of the people I work with and I have solidarity with (almost) all of my fellow Teamsters when it comes to fighting management on the shop-floor, which I am required to daily.

Ah yes, "the field" I am "educated in" is union organizing. Perhaps you didn't read my earlier posts, but after college I joined the SEIU Wave program and later studied at the National Labor College (a great resource that unfortunately seems to have been abandoned), and so organizing is my field and, well, lo and behold - I am organizing!

If you would like a saliva specimen for my DNA collection, just send me your mailing address to: [email protected]. I would be more than happy to send you saliva samples or any other bodily fluid.

To return to the meeting, Davison obviously couldn't show up for Day Sort Obliteration Explanation Meeting to provide details - as limited as they were - that everyone with less than a year would be laid off on all shifts in both major UPS Portland hubs, that MRAs+GWIs+longevity raises are not transferable, so therefore someone taking a transfer to Tacoma would make a minimum of $4.75 an hour less, and that many on the Swan Island Day Sort would still not be able to find positions on those other shifts for months and months because the Local has no clue what is happening ...

because he is Local 162 President, Joint Council 37 President, IBT International Vice President, IBT Western Region Package Division Representative, Trustee and Union Chair for the Oregon Teamster Employers Trust, Chair of the UPS Retirees Subsidy Fund, Trustee on the Teamsters Western Region & Local 177 (New Jersey) Health Care Plan and IBT Western Region Package Director.

The man literally works at least 6 full-time jobs. That's an incredible 48 hours a day, not including his charity work, making music videos from the 1980s and playing golf. How is he expected to operate on the same level as us common 24-hour clock folk? No Sleep Til Brooklyn?

Returning to OP and DanaCos - I like the TURD logos.
