    Union Busting at the IBT

    Union Busting.jpg

So the hit parade continues at the IBT. They refused to recognize a majority of the organizers and responded with this bullshit letter. The union busting is now going at warp speed. Maybe they can hire Nixon Peabody to help them with their union busting attempts. Chris Rozwell has lot's of experience in this already. Our new attorney has proven to be a tool for the OZholes as well. You can't make this shit up!

The question should be asked how many of those International Organizers came up from the rank and file and how many were hired from other unions or even straight out of college? I would think that any rank and file Teamster would want to stay Teamster no? If i was a IBT organizer coming up from the ranks staying Teamster would be a no brainer. I get it that there are problems just like with any other work force but how many BA's, office staff (other than DC) are fully represented by a contract? I think that letter is fair let the staff vote on representation, the letter states that the IBT will remain neutral.

It does not matter, staff unions abound in the labor movement. Many office staff in the Teamsters are represented by other unions. This is a false narrative used routinely by Unions to union bust their staffs. It actually is a good idea to have an outside union represent workers to prevent conflict of issue problems. You can hold membersip in both unions without reprisal. Here's a list of unions and other organizations including the AFL-CIO organizers represented by the Guild;?

There is nothing in the IBT constitution regarding dual membership outside the IBT. What ot states is that members cannot hold dual cards within the IBT. If members couldn't have multiple memberships, the dickstepper would have to kick half of her membership out because many carry cards with IBEW, IATSE, LIUNA, etc. That response and the organizers remaining Teamsters is bs. Foe those that were Teamsters, they are most likely on withdrawal because they have no home local to pay dues to.

From what little that I've seen on this, members who hold multiple cards are typically in different work or craft, for example, IBT & IATSE to be able to do different movie/tv/theater craft work. But not at the same time. Some benefit fund staff have their own unions, but aren't Teamsters. State labor feds and clc's have OPEIU in many areas for staff and even officers.
Some IBT staff at headquarters are OPIEU, but not Teamsters.
From what I've read, it seems that Organizers who weren't Teamsters in craft previously (were hired from failed organizing campaigns or just off the street hires) are the largest segment of this organizing drive. Those who were lost timers from a workplace, sponsored by their Local, and worked their way to staff seem to want to stay Teamsters. I don't know the pros and cons of these positions.

You don't have to stop being a "Teamster" to have representation while working for the IBT! That's such **** and bull. Keep paying dues to the Teamster Local you came out of, fine! But that Teamster Local isn't bargaining shit or representing your interests or the interests of your co-workers while on the job at the IBT. Why are we even having this discussion? Do people just want to be part of a club so they can wear a teamsters jacket or do they want to be fucking trade unionists?

399 and LIUNA have members that are dual union dues payers that are called hyphenates but No one here has mentioned "dual" membership until i brought out the fact that most Teamsters want to stay Teamster and that i thought that those organizers that were never Teamsters want to move on to a different union so Teamsterdriver25 calling me a union buster tells me your not proud to be a Teamster!

I would guess that they all want to be Teamsters. There experience with the IBT Organizing department has informed their decision to have a contract. Can anyone blame them? They should be able to remain Teamsters even when part of a Guild bargaining unit. Who does it hurt for them to have a contract?

It was a question, not an opinion. I could care less what they end up doing.

What makes the organizers Teamsters? What makes BAs, Office staff, titan operators or any other person that works in the locals without a contract a Teamster? Is it the fact that someone works for the organization that makes them a Teamster? Does paying dues make someone a Teamster? Is someone on layoff status from a Teamster position still considered a Teamster?

It would hurt the lead organizers and dept heads that have the ability to hire and fire because then they would have deal with just cause to fire a organizer. The ONLY contract that i have seen in my 35 year plus of being a Teamster that DOES not have "just cause" language is the 399 black book.

Yes if they are on withdraw and even if they fail to take a withdraw card they will always be able to be reinitiated into the union.

Very simple working for the union meets the definition of working in a craft and class. Officers, organizers and or agents who no longer hold seniority at a Teamster employer are considered to be working in a craft and class. The President of Teamsters Canada, also a GEB member never worked as a rank and file Teamster. So in essence an attorney working for a local, joint council or intenational can lets says become the General President of our International union. Does the name Hoffa Jr. sound familiar?

Exactly! As long as they are paying dues. The office staff that belong to say OPEIU are not recognized by the IBT as Teamsters because they are not dues paying members. So the organizers are paying dues AND they are "at will" employees. By them organizing under a different union or guild, the IBT would be hit with a double whammy. They would lose dues money AND the ability to fire any one of those organizers who don't fall in line.

Those that choose to could continue paying dues to their locals. Many are on a leave of absence from a signatory CBA and coulld pay dues as well.

I know the whole process of withdrawal, suspension, reinitiation. Read the question again. The question wasn't about suspension or withdrawal status. What makes any of those that I mentioned Teamsters? If a bookkeeper or BA is hired and did not come up through rank and file, are they considered Teamsters? I can tell you what the ibt says and why, but I'm curious what everyone else believes.
