United Parcel Service (UPS) Teamsters are witnessing a distressing trend. UPS Teamsters, particularly those working day shifts, are living under the threat of mass layoffs. The company's decision to slash thousands of union jobs across the country shows a complete disregard for its unionized workforce and the communities we live in and serve.

Just at one facility in Portland, Oregon, over 260 union positions are on the chopping block. Day shifts are being eliminated throughout the US. This is not just about job losses; it's about service disruptions that will inevitably impact housebound individuals, elderly citizens and other vulnerable groups who rely heavily on UPS deliveries.

This move by UPS stems from an insatiable drive for profits that overlooks the human element of their operations. The layoffs represent not only an attack on workers but also on vulnerable communities that depend on consistent delivery services.

We demand that UPS stop these brutal layoffs. We demand they protect day shifts from temporary and permanent closures nationwide - because these aren't just jobs; they're livelihoods supporting families while serving communities.

This is really one the biggest issues we face. Without members there is no union to change, to fight, to reform or use to defend workers. UPS is assaulting unionized labor on behalf of their Hedge Fund overlords.

Update from Local 162:

The Union has received a written change of operations notice that UPS intends on permanently closing the day sort shift/operation at the Swan Island facility in Portland and ceasing all operations on that sort/shift on or about April 18, 2024.

This written notice from UPS is in accordance with Article 38 of the National Master Agreement, which requires UPS to provide at least forty-five (45) days advance written notice to the Union of any change of operations that will result in a change of domicile (work location) and/or possible layoff of seniority employees.

UPS is also required under Article 38 to meet with the Union to provide all the details of the change of operations and resolve questions raised by the Union in connection with the change. This process is now under way and your Union is well prepared and experienced in responding to a change of operations.

Please be patient as we navigate this change of operations on your behalf and work to achieve a written change of operations agreement that is in full compliance with the provisions of the National Master, Western Supplement and Joint Council 37 Package and Sort Riders.

We certainly understand the anxiety and stress that a notice of layoff can create and appreciate your patience as we work through all of this. We are fielding many questions and concerns from the membership, and once we have received all of the details of this change of operations we will hold a meeting of all affected members at the Union Hall.

Wondering if this meeting will be on a Sunday during Day Sort! Union meetings don't accommodate day sort as they are always when we they are working.

There was a time when UPS was immune to layoffs, one would never hear of a layoff at big brown now it's the breaking news. Layoffs have hit Teamsters in industries besides UPS since 1903. We all know that there is nothing the union can do to stop layoffs, the union isn't there to make corporate decisions and to tell a company how to run it's business. What do you think a petition will do to stop layoffs at UPS?

This is precisely the orientation of failed business unionism.

Since WWII, the union apparatuses have maintained "labor peace" for the employer during the length of the contract. The "no strike" clauses and other giveaways to big business were not felt too strongly during the post-war period of rapid economic growth, high union density and intensive US industrialization (1944-1970). However, once the economic crises of the early 70s began, workers--not big business--began to feel the crunch. Since the mid-1970s wages, conditions and overall job stability for most working-class people have been in steep decline. De-industrialization (re-organization of industry outside of US), de-regulation, social and welfare austerity (cuts) measures, including an end to any semblance of the Great Society program, all meant that downward pressure on wages, in relative terms with inflation, have significantly reduced the working-class to the pauperism of pre-1930s radical unionism. In order to reverse this distressing trend--namely accelerating accumulation of wealth for the top 1% and reduction of living standards for working class people--we need to remember the strategies of those who died in the 20s and 30s of the last century so we could have unions. They fought not just for contracts, but for dignity at work, control of the operations, including leveraging strikes against layoffs and mass misery--to the point of death in many cases.

We face a much more difficult foe than bullets and the state--we face our own beaten down apathy, the fact that many of us see ourselves not from where we really our but from the bosses' perspective. We need to remember that we have the power; we produce, move and otherwise create this economy, and therefore we must have control of it.

I get what your saying but where were you all when all the other crafts in the IBT are getting laid off? It's normal when levels fall below what a company expects to operate at. Now that UPS is getting layoff notices the sky is falling! It's nothing new to everyone outside the brown bubble. Nothing can be done about it. Petitions, demonstrations won't bring back levels.

Another example is the movie Teamsters, the studios are not green lighting many new shows and there's thousands of Teamsters not back to work yet. Its almost March and still members are not back to work, still losing homes and cars and businesses. What has the dick stepper done about it, nothing because there is nothing that she can do. Sure she talks a big talk about her plans on the up coming contract negotiations but really what can she do? I remember her saying at a rally that work was suppose to be back in the new year and yet the studio lots are empty.
